How to obtain OSHA forklift training course certification
While you’re unemployed is a good idea to get your forklift license because legally you cannot handle one if you do not. Companies that employ unlicensed operators can be fined by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health). According to OSHA, employers must confirm that operators have been trained and tested properly before starting your work. So, while you are unemployed, train with a program that adheres to OSHA standards.
- Choose a training program. There are many courses you get OSHA certification when complete, but are designed specifically for experienced forklift operators who need a new certification, not for beginners. Beginners need personal training. Try lists of the Association of Training Schools for heavy equipment (look in Resources).
- Lists the written exam. During the first part of training, you will learn about the parts of a forklift, OSHA standards, inspection rules and other basic guidelines. You will make a written examination on these points.
- Takes the practical test. Once you learn the theoretical part, you can get on a truck and maneuver. Once you have completed the practical part you will be evaluated for your skills.
- Receive your certificate. After passing the practical examination, you will receive a certificate of forklift operator. You must show it to the employer when you will take a job that requires a forklift operator.
